An example of commensalism in my neighborhood



The relationship between a bird and a tree is an example of commensalism. Commensalism is a kind of symbiotic relationship between two species where one species benefits while the other is neither helped nor harmed. The bird, in this instance, is able to use the tree to build a nest. The nest becomes a safe and comfortable place for the bird to lay eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the nest is home to the bird and its offspring until the little ones learn how to fly and to feed themselves. The tree is not affected by the bird's nest in any way.
