1. In this lab, you are trying to discover the seven materials that make up the substance in a cup. To begin, carefully pour only the liquid in the cup through the funnel into the beaker.
2. Plug in the hot plate and place the beaker on it. Be careful and avoid any contact with it throughout the rest of the lab because it will be hot.
3. Dump out the solid contents of the cup onto the filter paper.
4. Now that the contents are spread out, you should be able to identify four different components of the cup.
5. Use the magnet to find the fifth component that is also on the filter paper.
6. By now, the amount of liquid in the beaker should be decreasing. That is because the liquid evaporated. Think about what liquid is the only kind to evaporate and you will get the sixth item in the lab.
7. Carefully using the tongs, pour the rest of the liquid into the sink. You should see little materials left at the bottom.
